Good Morning Meili

No crying or fussing this morning – just a few small whimpers and some tiny fingers playing with the old wooden slats on her worn crib. Meili is still trying to figure out the two pale giants with weird eyes that seem to inhabit her new world and caution is the theme of the day. She went to sleep in Tracy’s arms last night and actually fussed a little bit when we laid her in the crib but this morning she has rediscovered her armor and slowly roles away from us when we reach for her. In time, trust will replace suspicion and she will cling to us in the hopes that we will be the last shock in her little world. No more Meili, no more.

The orphanage director agreed when we met him yesterday to allow us to visit Meili’s orphanage and so we plan on doing so over the next couple days. It is about 2 hours east of Nanjing (between here and Shanghai) and one of the nicer orphanages in this part of China (from what we have read). We are hoping they will provide a little more background to her short life and perhaps show us the exact location she was found. In meeting the director yesterday, they presented us with two special gifts – a framed picture of the orphanage and the actual ad that was run in the local paper announcing the abandonment of Jung Wenhui and looking for information regarding her family. These ads are a mere formality because it is actually against the law to abandon your baby so nobody ever steps up. Regardless, it is a very valuable piece of her past we were thankful to receive.

We are off this morning on a return trip to the Civil Affairs office to complete this stage of the paperwork. After that, we will probably rest in the hotel room as this is the first day since Thursday of last week that we have nothing on the schedule to do and are long overdue for some rest. What an adventure this has been so far…

A look of concern from Meili yesterday when we first met her. She is holding in her hand a soft treat that was the only thing she would allow us to give her!
